Troparium Frutigen with relief facade of precast concrete elements
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel between Frutigen in the Bernese Oberland and Raron in the Canton of Wallis was opened in 2007. Not only trains rush through the nearly 35 kilometre long tunnel to Frutigen, but also 100 litres of warm water per second. What to do with it? The head of the site management for the tunnel, Peter Hufschmied, had an exotic idea: Why not operate a tropical centre with integrated sturgeon cultivation in the Swiss mountains? It opened in November 2009.
